On Aug. 26, two young men, Anil Mahaju and Diya (who does not want his last name published), tied the nuptial knot becoming the first same-sex couple in Nepal to do so in a public function.

Anil and Diya tell different stories about realizing they were gay. Diya, who works as an outreach educator, confessed that he had had a feminine attitude since childhood.
"I used to feel that I was like girls but was attracted to boys," said Diya while sipping a cold drink at his office in Baluwatar.
Anil, a professional photographer, had married more than a decade ago. But he indulged in taking drugs after a misunderstanding with his wife destroyed his conjugal life.
He separated from his wife and family and lived with friends. Four months ago, he met Diya at an awareness demonstration on HIV/AIDS and they became friends. The friendship grew.
Anil said that in Diya he had found the true love he was desperately looking for. He was cured of his drug addiction 18 months ago. He said his inclination toward homosexuality was aroused by Diya's love. Diya, however, had multiple partners but is now seeking solace in Anil's arms.
They have two goals in their life together: they want the upcoming constitution of Nepal to safeguard the rights of homosexuals and other sexual minorities, and they want to adopt a child. Be it as it may!
